Do you want to learn to meditate? Stop trying!

Meditation and inner joy
Are you aware of whether you meditate actively or passively, or do you find it challenging enough to sit still for 15 minutes or half an hour?

Learning objectives and topics

Being conscious is a verb

Of the many years I have been meditating, I sat still for about the first 17 years—literally! The great secret of good meditation is that it revolves around energy and feeling, but I was never told that. That has nothing to do with whether or not one can sit still. From the Buddhist approach to Awareness, meditation is being conscious. Being aware of your posture, behavior, interactions with others, how you speak to others, and so on. Awareness is a way of life in which you do not sit passively still, but are actively present in the moment. And so, for 17 years, I sat mostly passively still.

So meditating is pointless?

That is not true, of course, but how do you meditate? Are you aware of whether you are meditating actively or passively, or do you find it challenging enough just to sit still for 15 minutes or half an hour? Most traditions teach you to meditate passively, where you also have to be careful not to fall asleep. You relax, and every now and then a drop of insight falls to you, but you don't become much wiser. This changes quickly with walking meditation or yoga, and that is actually quite logical; you enter the more active part.

Trance as a form of passive meditation

Let me first begin with the passive form of meditation and try to explain its characteristics and purpose. When you meditate with a passive form of energy, you practice the path toward trance, or surrender. Meditation in a passive form is always the first step, because it helps you to ' empty ' your mind or gain insight into what is going on in your thoughts. This is often the first step, but not necessarily the only one. In mediumship, “trance” is used for what they call Trance Healing and Trance Speaking.

The word trance is often used in various contexts:

  • a change of a state of consciousness, or
  • a stayed of consciousness

By entering a trance, we give the spiritual world space to make use of our mental and physical qualities. In this way, they can use our vocal cords to speak or perform healing through our energetic body. Anyone who has experienced this knows how special it is and will be aware that there is more between heaven and earth. Naturally, you do not develop this with 'meditating once'; it is a combination of gift, perseverance, and discipline.

The flow of your own power

From the passive form of meditation, you can learn to handle the active form. This, too, does not have to be a difficult or complicated process. We all know this active form! When you are angry, nervous, in love, anxious—and I remember it best from the moments when I had to perform and went onto the stage. Your stomach starts to tingle, your heart starts beating faster, and you begin to perspire lightly. This is the energy you seek when you meditate actively.

What you learn from this is “ standing in your own power .” For no matter how nervous you are stepping onto the stage, as soon as the first notes sound, the feeling is gone and you enter a flow. And it is in this flow that you stand in your power and can, as it were, take on the whole world. It would be a bit much to explain exactly what happens to you energetically, but an important force is involved with this energy: the power of creation.

Make this power your own

Whether you need to study for an exam, are busy writing a book, or enjoy painting from your intuition... this works best when you are standing in your own power. For true meditation, you don't need to try anything; you just have to do it. Stand with both feet in life, energetically rouse yourself, and stay in that energy. Feel happy, in love, or tense. Whatever it takes to generate that energy, and you can achieve anything you want. Does meditating still make sense then? Absolutely, but you shouldn't try it!
